Costa Rica : SAN JOSE

Everything must come to an end! For the last chapter of my Costa Rica travel diary, I’m going to tell you more about San Jose, the capital of the country. The city isn’t highly touristic, but it’s a inevitable transfer point between different destinations.

That’s where we landed, where we spent a night in the middle of our trip to take a flight to Corcovado, and where we spent our last two nights before heading back to cold New York.

I have mixed feelings about San Jose. On the one side it’s rather nice since tourists don’t spend too much time there, so you’re really immersed in local life.

On the other side, let’s be honest, if people don’t spend much time there, it’s because there isn’t much to do!

There a few museums, but we really didn’t feel like spending time in front of windows when we had spent two weeks living in nature and luxury cabins. There is a nice covered market, famous for its soda bars, where you can eat tacos and quesadillas for nothing. There is a nice colonial neighborhood. It’s fast food paradise : there is a Mc Donald every hundred miles, and in between KFC, Wendy’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut. Shopping? Forget about it, unless you like very tight tee-shirts and questionable prints.

One place to visit, though, is the Nuestra Tierra restaurant, where you can rediscover Costa Rica specialties such as very good meat served with plantain bananas, Pico de Gallo (dice cut tomatoes, pepperoni, onions and jalapenos peppers in lime juice and coriander), and Gallo Pinto (rice and red beans).

When you leave San Jose, after crossing coffee plantations, there are a few volcanoes that are worth the trip. We went to La Poas crater, 23 miles northwest of the city. This active volcano (fumaroles and phreatic eruptions) is located 2708 m high, with a crater and an acid lake that releases toxic sulfurated vapors. Actually, the atmosphere isn’t very pleasant. You can feel there is less oxygen, and it’s hard to breathe. And yet you feel so small, and it’s so impressive, that it’s worth being uncomfortable for a few minutes.

We also visited the Waterfall Gardens in La Paz. It was on our schedule, but I didn’t really understand why! It’s a nice zoo with some pretty waterfalls (no comparison with the ones in Pacuare or Corvocado!). The principle of the zoo is that the animals living there can’t actually live in their natural environment, either because they were rescued from being illegal domestic friends, or because they were wounded and wouldn’t survive in nature. The other ones were just born there and will probably never know anything else. I know it’s great that there is such a place to show people how bad it can be to try domesticating animals that should live in the jungle. But it’s so sad seeing these animals behind a window or in cages when you just saw them free. Not really necessary!! You don’t need to spend more than one day in San Jose to see a volcano and take a walk in the central mercado.

For the hotel in San Jose, I trusted Snaptraveller and we stayed at the KC Colaye Hotel. A modern hotel with large rooms, a nice pool and a restaurant, very convenient for transfer and short stay (it’s far from downtown traffic jam). One of the things we really appreciated in this hotel is that some rooms have a kitchenette with a refrigerator, a microwave, plates, and knifes and forks. When you spent two weeks going to restaurants three times a day, it’s really nice to make your own little dinner : a tomato salad, a mango and a yogurt.

This is the last post about this journey in Costa Rica and the last focus on one specific topic! I couldn’t end this series of articles without telling you about the organization of the trip itself!

As you know, it was our honeymoon. Because it was now or never, and because we’re not the best at planning anything, we quickly decide to ask a Travel Planner to do the job, so we would have almost nothing to do. We knew exactly what we wanted : a perfect mix of adventure and farniente, many different places, and above all being just the two of us as often as possible, or part of a very small group if we had to, but no big buses and group of tourists. We contacted several Honeymoon Planners on the web, and after a few emails we chose Black Tomato, a British agency specialized in tailor-made travels. Our counselor was really reactive and enthusiastic ; he asked us very relevant questions to find out what we were really expected and respected our maximum budget. In fact, we planned our dream vacation via emails. Rob submitted different stops with a hotel/lodge (most of the time on TripAdvisor) and activities (rafting, hiking in the jungle, snorkeling, boat trips…) and we could accept or ask for something else (for instance, I insisted on going to the Pacuare Lodge). We could also ask to spend an extra night in a place and one less night in another. Once we had validated our schedule and our budget, we had nothing else do to. Black Tomato did all the bookings, and organized all the private transfers to go to one place to another. We had nothing to worry about. Once there, their partner in Costa Rica Saint Germain Tours took care of us. We just had to be on time at the meeting point and there would always be a car or a minivan to take us to our next step. They were never late, there never was a time when we thought “oh crap, they forgot us!”. It was perfect. Well, obviously, this service has a price, but on the other side, the “zero stress and perfect organization” aspect was really nice!! I don’t know if we’ll do it again – we don’t always have that much money, and it’s not necessary to do this every time you travel. But for a honeymoon, it’s the perfect little luxury that makes the whole difference! And if we happen to need another bespoke trip, we’ll definitely call Black Tomato again!

There we are! My honeymoon diary is over! You know everything about our trip, from the reasons why we picked this destination to the photo equipment we had, through the Travel Planner we entrusted with our dream of returning to nature.

I hope you liked this diary as much as I liked plunging myself back in our photos and fresh memories! Have a nice Sunday, and see you tomorrow for the regular programs!

PS : I broke the screen of my iPhone during the trip! This wouldn’t have happened if only I had put the pineapple case right away… I also bought the hot dog and French fries versions, you’ll see…
