My NYFW Diary – DAY 1 : BCBGMAXAZRIA

Back to Fashion marathon! The Fall Winter 2014 Fashion Week started two days ago at the Lincoln Center.

Let me put this straight : it took me a while to get in the mood. When I’m writing this, I’m keyed up again, so happy to share with you, day after day, my second Fashion Week in New York, NYFW for friends and family (and compulsive not anonymous “hashtaggers”).

Things started pretty well the night before with the event at Paule Ka, a brand I’m so fond of and that you heard about many times on this blog. The first Paule Ka boutique opened on Madison Avenue and 63rd, less than fifteen minutes walk from my place – and 5 minutes by cab when wearing high heels… The shop perfectly reflects the spirit of Paule Ka. Take a look here, I can’t find my words! The dreamy dressing salon, vintage-inspired New York design and timelessly elegant Parisian style. Things started pretty well : I even met the smiling Serge Cajfinger, the man behind Paule Ka.

But on Thursday morning, I really didn’t want to go. It had been a few days since I started fearing the combination of harsh climate and Fashion Week. I saw the snow turning into ice a little more every day, and the temperatures dropping so low that I started losing hope for a weather miracle to happen.

Finding the right balance between “being well dressed because it’s the Fashion Week, I mean, it’s now or never!” and “I’ll have to take pictures and thus bring my X kilos of material” (I’m going to weigh the bag one day!) is always a big headache… But if you add to this equation a third variable that is “it’s -7°C and there are blocks of snow 30 cm high on the sidewalks so you won’t get out of a cab without losing your dignity”, you can easily turn into Grouchy Smurf.

And yet the program for my first day was nice and light (let’s not be exhausted on the first day!) : only one show (but what show!) with a backstage pass, and a nice event at night.

However, I had gone to bed really late the night before, and got up at 6 AM… And I really blamed myself for not having prepared my outfits for the entire week in advance : “blank page, Oh my god I have nothing to wear, I have to leave in less than an hour…”

Being so demotivated, I chose a “not risky at all” outfit that I knew would be comfortable, easy to melt into the crowd without being noticed (the anti-fashion-week outfit, in short!) and above all, WARM.

Black, volumes, my sweet Chanel (similar authenticated second-hand handbags on Instant Luxe), nude manicure, red lipstick : nothing too original.

Multi layers strategy with my traditional Uniqlo heattech legging and long sleeves t-shirt, a black cashmere sweater, my dear TOPSHOP Mom jeans, my platform Puma sneakers, my beautiful Dauphines of New York headband, and a warm, beautiful, comfy knitted cape from a Parisian brand I’ll tell you more about quite soon, Romy and Ray.

I leave you with the pictures and I’ll tell you more about this first day right afterwards!

So, it’s in this rather nice outfit but, let’s face it, so underdressed for a fashion week, that I left for the Lincoln Center to attend the BCBGMAXAZRIA show. After getting my backstage pass, I went to the tent where the preparations were carried out.

Backstage is usually my favorite part : an anthill of activity with make-up and hair, and a chance to see the clothes better than on the catwalk. I usually get to take great pictures.

I was a bit disappointed because when I arrived, hair and make-up were done and the models weren’t dressed yet – the gorgeous clothes were still on the hanging rails, so it wasn’t the best way to reveal the collection to you! The few precious minutes I spent backstage were devoted to rehearsal, so I just took a few pictures of the models during the briefing, while they were patiently waiting for their turn.

I felt quite dissatisfied when I went to my seat, hoping that I’d have a better chance to show you the collection with my pictures of the runway.

On my way, I saw a group of people and a lot of flashing cameras, so I got closer…

What a shock! It was Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey Washington in one of my favorite TV shows “Orange is the new black”! I was all shook up, for I wasn’t expecting this… I couldn’t take her portrait. I lowered my camera at the very moment she looked at me. I know: I suck.

And on top of all this, it really wasn’t easy taking pictures…

In fact, if you want to take pictures when you’re not with the accredited photographers, then you’d better be standing (that is to say squeezed at the back with a chance of being asked to leave if there are too many people) than having, like me, an assigned seat in the middle of the fourth row with a very limited view.

Here is what it looked like from where I was sitting… and the person right before me hadn’t arrived yet…

When the show started, I quickly realized that it would be complicated to take pictures… The runway was like a U and I was on the return side, with a white light on my back and a pink halo in front of me… If I wanted to show you the silhouettes, I had to zoom to the first part of the U… and you could only see half of the models… Damn it! Missed again!

Photo bad luck was on me that day, so I decided to enjoy it with my own eyes!

I waited for the final to shoot some of my favorite silhouettes. I loved the collection, especially the jackets and coats, the fur accessories, the mix of materials, the colored lines on fitted or large volumes…

And this cape on the last picture… It would be so perfect to be warm AND stylish during the Fashion Week…

Bravo to Lubov and Max Azria for this powerful Fall Winter 2014 collection!

Despite the “epic fail” feeling of being unable to show you some nice pictures, I enjoyed the show however. You can see pictures of the collection in general media.

At the end of the show, a nice group of superstar bloggers!

To end this first day, a few iPhone pictures of a very nice event where I met the pretty Betty for the first time : the launching of MARC JACOB FRAGRANCES POP UP with the effigy of Daisy fragrance. The concept is quite crazy : you don’t give money in exchange for products! You pay with “social currency”, that is to say tweets and instagrams. Note also the gorgeous illustrations of Langley Fox.

That’s it for DAY ONE. I hope that my photographic misfortune made you laugh, even though it made it impossible for me to take pictures as nice as I had hoped.

Anyway, this day helped me regain my motivation and my childish enthusiasm for this freezing and a little crazy fashion week.

See you soon for the rest of this Fashion Week Diary. Have a nice week-end!

  1. Tu as une chance folle.

Ps: chanel never goes out of style, karl est comme même “la référence”

  5. Tes puma sont vraiment jolies ! Où les as-tu dénichées ???
Je viens à new york début mars, la fashion sera malheureusement terminée mais je pense me régaler autrement…

Merci ! Et bonne fashion week !

  10. mais oui Orange is the new black ma serie preferee du moment excellent en fait je regardais tes photos et arrivé a la photo de poussey je me dis mais je connais cette fille 😉 mais oui Poussey excellent quels bons moments et quel chance 😉 merci du partage bizzzzzz
